No --- I simply got rid of the 'unix password sync' option in my smb.conf file (I wasn't really using it anyway), and everything started working again. Then after login I issued the same command as root, and the log file shows the response: /var/log/samba/log.nmbdCode: Select all[2013/04/14 10:02:56, 0] nmbd/nmbd.c:861(main)
nmbd version 3.6.9-151.el6 started.

Problem here was "testparm" is somehow missing from PATH (and entire system)...but that's its own problem. The "start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE!=lo)" should however be late enough... So when you did 'yum install samba' you got that version rather than 3.5 from the main repositories.
